Mixed Media Painting Essentials
A 2-Day Intensive with David Austin
This two-day intensive is about expanding how you paint—and rethinking what your tools can do.
In Mixed Media Painting Essentials, I’ll walk you through how I use a range of materials together to build layered, intentional work. We’ll work with acrylic paint alongside acrylic markers, soft pastels, different surfaces, palette knives, and other mixed media tools, focusing on how to use them in new, creative, and functional ways.
I’ll demonstrate techniques for creating depth, movement, and structure, and show you how different media can work together rather than compete with each other. The goal isn’t to collect tricks—it’s to build confidence, break out of habits, and develop a process that feels flexible and responsive instead of rigid.
This workshop is for artists who want to push beyond a single-medium mindset, experiment without overthinking, and walk away with tools they can actually use in their own practice. I’ll offer guided instruction, individual feedback, and plenty of time to explore and experiment.
You’ll leave with finished work, a stronger understanding of how to combine materials, and a renewed sense of momentum in your painting practice.
You don’t need to have everything figured out—just show up ready to work, explore, and try things you haven’t tried before.
I will guide you through practical demonstrations and exercises that show how different media can work together to create depth, movement, and intention on the surface. The focus is on using materials in new, creative, and functional ways—pushing beyond habits, loosening control, and discovering fresh approaches that feel authentic to you.
This workshop is ideal for artists who want to:
Break out of a single-medium mindset
Build confidence combining materials
Learn versatile techniques they can carry into future work
Develop a more intuitive, fearless painting process
Expect guided instruction, individual feedback, and plenty of time to experiment. You’ll leave with finished pieces, new tools in your creative toolbox, and a renewed sense of possibility in your painting practice.
No perfection required—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
