L' école
24”x24” on cradled board
Soft Pastel
Part of my Destinations series. The application of the pastel is deep and pigment heavy evoking depth and texture in this series. Born of my desire to explore iconography and the relationships we have in small communities and families while also interacting with the world at large.
This was the first of the series I created. We had been struggling with finding suitable school fit for our son. The school he was enrolled in was making our bright, happy 5 year old into a quiet and shrinking personality. The last day we dropped him off he said “you are just not listening to me, I am not happy here.” That was his last day there. As parents we have always struggled with what school is “for.” What is it being used for? How does it impact the society and family life? I was struggling to deal with the complex feelings and implications and this artwork came to life.
